Szell, George
(7 jun. 1897, Budapest, Hungría, Austria-Hungría–30 jul. 1970, Cleveland, Ohio, EE.UU.).

Director de orquesta estadounidense de origen húngaro. A los 11 años de edad hizo su debut como pianista y antes de su vigésimo cumpleaños se había presentado con la Filarmónica de Berlín en calidad de pianista, director de orquesta y compositor. Se consagró como director de ópera en distintas ciudades alemanas, entre ellas Berlín (1924–30) y Praga (1930–36). Cuando estalló la segunda guerra mundial, se estableció en EE.UU., donde fue director del Metropolitan Opera (1942–46) y después se desempeñó como director musical de la Cleveland Orchestra (1946–70). En esta agrupación impuso una severa disciplina, pero se ganó la devoción de los músicos por su dedicación tenaz. Bajo su dirección la orquesta llegó a ser conocida por su precisa ejecución y fue considerada una de las mejores del mundo.
